A rowers refreshing bid for World AIDS Day
In celebration of National Black HIV/AIDS awareness day, a grassroots campaign is launched for people to join a facebook group dubbed - Vote and we win!
BROOKLYN, NY, February 07, 2010 /Medical PR News/ -- Victor Mooney (44), of Queens, New York has signed up for the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project, which is giving away millions each month to fund refreshing ideas that change the world. The ideas with the most votes will receive grants. Mooney hopes his idea - getting people tested for HIV/AIDS in America wins. Voting starts next month for the rower.
In 2006, both Black men and women had the highest HIV death rates per 100,000, ages 25-34 and 35-44. Also, HIV was the fourth leading cause of death for Black men and third leading cause of death for Black women, ages 25-44. Unfortunately, many of those who are infected with HIV are unaware of their status and may unknowingly transmit the virus to others.
On World AIDS Day, December 1st, in a seventeen foot rowboat, Mooney will depart from Cape Verde, an archipelago of islands about 300 miles west of Senegal and begin a five-thousand mile solo row to New York's Brooklyn Bridge. The journey is expected to take up to twenty-two weeks. Mooney hopes his third attempt at this feat will encourage HIV testing, raise money for medicine and research.
