Lillia E. King Recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Health Care Administration

Lillia King has been named a VIP member for 2011-2012

SAINT THOMAS, UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS, November 10, 2011 /Medical PR News/ -- Lillia E. King, recently retired Supervisor of the Histopathology Department at the Virgin Islands Government Hospital - Schneider Regional Medical Center, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in health care administration.

Coming from a family of self-made, culturally deeply-rooted West Indian people, career USVI Municipal and Federal Government employees and doctors, Ms. King, recently retired, now celebrates 43½ years in the field of technical and health care administration. Of the 43+ years, 27 years were spent as managing supervisor of Histopathology, 11 years as a university-level co-instructor of Anatomy and Physiology (for eight years, she taught practical nursing students at the University of the Virgin Islands, also known as the College of the Virgin Islands, and three years at the SRMC-based LP nursing program) and 2 years as a guest lecturer in a local public health substance abuse program.

Ms. King utilized her strong health care administration skills to maintain the myriad of day-to-day functions of the Histopathology Department, created, maintained and oversaw the mechanization/computerization of cancer files that later served as the basis for a cancer registry, created and maintained all patient consultation files and for four years fulfilled the transcription of Histopathology reports culminating in distribution to all medical personnel. In an effort to streamline the documentation phase of the Histopathology Department, she designed and co-built the three computerized Histopathology Modules that led up to the system now in use at Schneider Regional Medical Center. Over the last 10 years of her tenure at Schneider Regional, Ms. King supervised four permanent credentialed employees. However, irrevocably convinced that in order to ensure trained and experienced future Histopathology employees, she designed and organized both a summer student program (with hospital and VI Dept. Of Labor backing) for high school and college students (for a short time the college students included fourth-year medical students from an American Caribbean-based medical school) and a two-semester work/study program also for high school and college students. In addition to the medical students, Ms. King, with hospital approval, worked through the high school counselors and college advisors to set up work schedules. The students received grade credits upon completion of the program.

Ms. King also managed formulation of departmental budgets, researched and included in her annual reports suggestions for cost-effective procedures that were congruent with the hospital's Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation requirements. Further, she attended committee meetings regarding forms, policies and procedures.

Ms. King's coursework towards a master's degree in hospital administration from the California College of Health Care Sciences was interrupted by the onset of a brief illness and subsequent passing of her mother, however, she holds a bachelor's degree in Biology from the College of St. Elizabeth at Convent Station, NJ, is a registered Medical Technologist, is associated with The American Association of Bioanalysts, is professionally affiliated with the National Society for Histotechnology and is a certified paralegal (accredited by the Washington Online Learning Institute, Nanuet, NY).

In recognition of outstanding work in her field, Ms. King earned certification of merit for 25 years of service, as well as Congressional recognition for 35 years of service. Further, she was honored with the Tommy Star Award as Public Service Associate of the Year by the St. Thomas/St. John Hotel Association and the District Chamber of Commerce. Ms. King attributes her success to the marvelous example and encouragement of her parents, the late Governor and Mrs. Cyril E. King, hard work and passion to serve through her profession.

When not working, Ms. King enjoys spending time with her loving family, cooking gardening, exercising and listening to music. In addition, she has also been and continues to be involved with a number of philanthropic efforts, including CEO of the Gov. & Mrs. Cyril E. King Memorial Museum, Inner Wheel USA, the Inner Wheel Club of St. Thomas and two Catholic Diocesan projects, one of which she serves as Co-Executive Member for the restoration of the 163-year-old Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Cathedral, the Mother Church for the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.
