FALLS CHURCH, VA, September 30, 2011 /Medical PR News/ -- Anna R. Utter, B.S., IBCLC, RLC, Regional Director of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in lactation consultancy.
With more than three decades in the field of maternal-child health, Ms. Utter has had professional as well as personal experience in helping new mothers overcome obstacles to breast-feeding. As regional director of the IBLCE, the nonprofit organization that administers the certification examination for aspiring lactation consultants, she ensures that all candidates meet eligibility requirements. She also manages all administrative operations for the examination in North America, Central America, South America and Israel. Ms. Utter is proud to mention that the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners offers the only professional certification in the lactation consultancy field. She feels grateful for the opportunity to work with the team with whom she currently works.
Ms. Utter earned a Bachelor of Science in medical technology from American University and is credentialed as both an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Registered Lactation Consultant. She attributes her success to her hard work, ability to overcome challenges, and passion for the health benefits associated with breast-feeding. She was inspired to follow her current career path after she experienced the advantages of breast-feeding her own children, volunteering as a breast-feeding support counselor, and owning a private lactation consultancy for 10 years. The highlight of her career occurred in January 2011 when the U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Regina Benjamin, announced the benefits of breast-feeding at a conference in Washington, D.C. Ms. Utter was able to sit directly in front of Dr. Benjamin as she delivered her speech and later had the opportunity to shake her hand. Ms. Utter was instrumental in the surgeon general's call to action on breast-feeding and its benefits to both mother and baby.
In the years ahead, Ms. Utter aspires to expand the IBLCE certification program, facilitate the development of academic programs in lactation consultant education, and contribute to initiatives for achieving licensure and third-party reimbursement for IBCLCs.
